Filipino-Americans are finding new ways to reconnect with their roots—and for filmmaker Joel Nathan “Bani” Logroño, that journey is being told through animation. Appearing on The Chairman’s Report hosted by Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) Secretary Dante “Klink” Ang II, Logroño on Friday shared the origin and mission of The Filipino Story, a nonprofit initiative that started during the pandemic in the United States and now serves as a cultural touchstone for Filipino families abroad. “The Filipino Story… it’s just like a friend telling you what being Filipino is,” said Logroño. “It’s educational, but not necessarily that kind of academic language.” The initiative was born out of The Filipino School in San Diego, California, which once offered language and cultural classes for Filipino-American families. When the school closed during the pandemic, its founder, Filipino entrepreneur Tony Olaes, envisioned a new format inspired by The Bible Project, using animated storytellin...

12mn review…

Image
By: Christian Bables Just watched the first 2 episodes of the Filipino adaptation of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay… and as an actor, and more importantly, as someone who found healing in the original K-drama, I felt compelled to share this. The original series wasn’t just beautifully made, it was transformative. It cracked open difficult truths about trauma, emotional repression, and the need to be seen, all told through characters that were both complex and painfully human. That show personally helped me name wounds I didn’t even know I had. So naturally, I was both excited and protective, as a fan and as someone who was deeply moved by the series, coming into this local version. But tonight… I felt nothing but pride. From the first frame, it was clear. We didn’t just translate a story, we embodied it. We gave it our own soul, our own cultural texture. Ramdam mo ang lalim ng Filipino sensibility. The quiet strength, the internal battles, the way we carry pain with tenderness and humo...

Golden buzzer after 20 years

Image
By: Hensie Tumbagahan It took her 20 long years to find the courage and step onto the stage once again at America's Got Talent. The reason : She failed. When she was 11 years old, she didn't advance to the next round. She took the hit hard, constantly feeling restraint of other people's opinions about who she was. Yet, one thing remained true : she loved to sing. She loves singing, indeed! Failure is only proven when we stop claiming our dreams - when we let the words of the audience to take center stage rather than standing on it ourselves. For Jessica Sanchez, it was clear : "I know who I am." Gosh, she possesses a powerful voice, and not just a singing voice; it's the voice of courage. What are you going to do to make your younger self proud of your adult version? Watch her performance here : https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1Fceb3b5qB/

Image
By: Cyril Cabrerra OZAMIZ CITY, Philippines – Against a backdrop of relentless rain and unwavering spirit, the Perangat Ozamiz Festival 2025 cemented itself as the city’s most historic and empowering cultural celebration to date. Held on July 16 in commemoration of Ozamiz City’s 77th Charter Anniversary and the Feast of Nuestra Señora dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de la Cruz de Migpangi, the festival turned city streets into living stages for Subanen-inspired rituals, youth-led performances, and a celebration of community identity. A cultural proclamation eleven contingents from barangays and schools across Ozamiz painted the city with motion and color through Subanen-themed street dances, ritual dramatizations, and vibrant musical showcases. The highlight? The Ritual Showdown and Festival Queen Coronation, which drew hundreds despite the inclement weather. But what truly set this year apart wasn’t just the artistry—it was the prize fund, which was tripled for the first time in f...

Legarda warns of massive negative impact of climate change to economy

Image
Senator Loren Legarda today emphasized the urgency of climate action in the country, as climate change could cost the Philippines significant losses in life and in the economy. “It previously reported that between 2014 and 2023, nearly 43 million Filipinos were displaced due to disasters. By 2030, the projected cost of productivity loss here in the Philippines from extreme heat alone could reach P466 billion annually,” Legarda pointed out during the launch of the ACT Local Programme in Sibalom, Antique. The World Risk Index named the Philippines as the most-at-risk country due to climate change in the world for the 16th straight year, due to frequent and destructive storms. If the country continues to display inaction in responding to the problem, climate change could wipe away 13% in the gross domestic product by 2040. She also reminded the role of local government units in being proactive in helping out their constituents as the point of contact during natural calamities. Becau...

What use is another world crown if our national crown is damaged?

Image
“I prefer to be alive, so I'm cautious about taking risks.” —Werner Herzog By Alex P. Vidal DO we really need another world boxing crown? Why not if it will catapult the Philippines back to limelight? But do we need to sacrifice a national crown for that additional world crown? Of course not. Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) is the Philippines’ national crown, a sports treasure who has been inducted into boxing’s Hall of Fame on June 8, 2025. It should have been enough. Being enshrined in the Hall of Fame is already worth more than another world crown at this stage of Pacquiao’s life. But the story did not end there. The 46-year-old former Philippine senator will climb back the ring to face 30-year-old Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) for the 12-round WBC welterweight belt at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 19, 2025. The former eight-division titlist from Saranggani province in Mindanao retired from prizefighting after losing to Yordenis Ugas (27-6, 12 KOs) by 12-rou...
