Communities in Batangas City call to stop massive gas build-out in Global South

Communities in Batangas City conducted a protest on November 19, 2025 in light of the campaign launch of “Don’t Gas the South,” calling on governments gathering in BelĂ©m, Brazil for #COP30 to stop the massive gas build-out in the Global South that is undermining global climate goals. The protest was originally designed as a fluvial action but the protesters were stopped by authorities. Touted as the Philippines' fossil gas hub, Batangas City hosts seven major operating fossil gas power plants with a combined capacity of approximately 4,610.5 megawatts (MW), one of the highest concentrations in the country. These include the Ilijan Combined-Cycle Power Plant (1,436.5 MW) in Barangay Ilijan; the Santa Rita Power Plant (1,133.9 MW) and San Lorenzo Power Plant (586.5 MW), both located in Barangay Sta. The future of Philippine cinema shone brightly as the 8th Sine Kabataan Short Film Festival recently concluded its awards night at the Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinemas in Mandaluyong City. Organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines as part of the Philippine Film Industry Month celebration, the festival championed the diverse voices and bold storytelling of young filmmakers aged 18 to 23 from across the country. Emerging as the night’s biggest winner was the intimate family drama “When It Rained Malunggay Leaves,” which took home the Best Short Film, in addition to winning Best Screenplay for writer-director Cedrick Valenzuela and Best Editing for Vince Maliksi. Kuala Lumpur– A Kalibonhon resident is expanding her influence on the ASEAN scale as she was appointed as one of the ambassadors representing the Philippines. Maria Damian, who hails from Barangay Estancia, Kalibo, said that her appointment as one of the ambassadors came after she participated in the 10th ASEAN Young Entrepreneurs Carnival. The said event was recently held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This year’s theme is “Inspiring Global Transformation.” The carnival aims to celebrate a decade of connecting and empowering young entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration, and creating impact among the ASEAN nations.
